The Significance Of Labor Day In The United States Of America

Find Tax Jobs

The very first Labor Day was held on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City. It was celebrated with picnics, speeches and a concert. Ten thousand workers marched in a parade from City Hall to Union Square. Thereafter, the Labor Day celebration was moved to the first Monday in September. President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with the labor movement as a top political priority after the Pullman Strike in June 1894. He ensured Labor Day became an official Federal holiday. The purpose of Labor Day is to talk about the contributions that workers have made to the development, growth, endurance, strength, security, prosperity, productivity, laws and well-being of the country.

Oregon was the first state in the U.S. to make it an official public holiday. By the time Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894, thirty states officially celebrated Labor Day.  Subsequently, all states in the U.S. made Labor Day a public holiday. While Canada also celebrates Labor Day on the first Monday in September, more than eighty countries celebrate a similar holiday on May 1 each year named International Workers Day. In the United States, Labor Day is also called the “unofficial end of summer” because it marks the end of the summer season.  Many people take vacations during this long holiday weekend before school begins. Labor Day is also well-known as an important weekend for discounts and allowances and is often the second largest sales date of the year after the Christmas holiday season.
