The very first Labor Day was held on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City. It was celebrated with picnics, speeches and a concert. Ten thousand workers marched in a parade from City Hall to Union Square. Thereafter, the Labor Day celebration was moved to the first Monday in September. President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with the labor movement as a top political priority after the Pullman Strike in June 1894. He ensured Labor Day became an official Federal holiday. The purpose of Labor Day is to talk about the contributions that workers have made to the development, growth, endurance, strength, security, prosperity, productivity, laws and well-being of the country.
