Taxation Of Sugary Drinks To Raise Revenue And Improve Health

sugary drinks

The title of this post is an oxymoron or a figure of speech in which contradictory terms appear in conjunction with each other. Excise taxes on sugary drinks are more common these days than ever before given the increase of diseases like diabetes on populations around the world. You may find this report from the Legislative Analysts Office on Taxation of Sugary Drinks interesting.

We often are unaware of all the taxes on the things we consume each day and how the government views these taxes. It is an interesting perspective you may want to learn more about.

  1. Avatar Ronald J Cappuccio says:

Sugary Drink taxes are a boon to beverage manufacturers. The reason is it is much more expensive to produce a drink with real sugar compared to the various “diet” sweeteners. Even though sugar soda and diet soda sell for the sam price per can or bottle, the manufacturer (or bottler) makes much more per can of diet drink. All these taxes do is increase the profits of the bottler and decrease the fair choices of consumers.

  2. Sodas are still the cheapest drinks you can find at restaurants other than water. And most restaurants you find around here will refill your soda more often than they will refill your water. They also don’t offer water unless you ask for it.
