The Coalition to Simplify Colorado Sales Tax Held First Stakeholder Meeting

While Sales Tax impacts most every business in Colorado, compliance for many is difficult and errors are costly. The Coalition to Simplify Colorado Sales Tax is spearheading meetings to drive changes.

The first meeting held September 9th, 2015 at the Capitol was attended by State legislators, the Colorado Municipal League, key Department of Revenue personnel, a Mayor and multiple businesses and business representatives.

You’re invited to participate in the meetings over the next few months leading up to the next General Assembly. Email info@simplifycosalestax.org and request to be notified.

The mission of the coalition is to reform Colorado’s excessively complex sales and use tax system with multiple goals: fairness, simplicity, and predictability for business; revenue neutrality to avoid any adverse impact on local and state public services; and a competitive economic environment in Colorado that will attract employers. This coalition of businesses, trade organizations, and other interested taxpayers will drive reforms to achieve these goals.

Topics discussed included:

• Prior proposed legislation

• An update on Standardized Definitions

• A common portal for business registrations and sales tax return filings

• Address verification

• The need for binding guidance from the CO Department of Revenue

Representative Conti indicated the issues discussed have been previously addressed in various prior draft legislation. She said the drafts are available to springboard off of or otherwise modify as needed.

My primary focus is on Colorado State and local sales and use tax issues and the associated challenges facing those doing business in Colorado. I defend clients against Colorado State, Denver and other home-rule cities’ sales and tax audits.

I also follow sales tax issues nationally, and apply my knowledge to help clients in whatever states they do business in. I enjoy helping clients save money, understand the issues and determine taxability. Clients get peace of mind through understanding their obligations, developing procedures to properly comply and resolving issues.

I work to defend clients against unfair audits and to reduce tax, penalty and interest assessments. I also works to simplify tax laws. I educate taxpayers on sales and use tax issues to prevent or minimize future difficulties.
