We have five children all about to enter college over these next few years. Can you tell me about the different types of education tax benefits available?

Assuming you do not have any 529 type plans in place, there are two types of education benefits available to most taxpayers. The education Credits and the education deductions. Deductions are a lowering of your taxable income and can be up to $4000 depending on your gross income. There are two credits. Credits are a dollar for dollar reduction in your tax. The American Opportunity Credit can be for up to $2500 per student and the Lifetime Learning Credit is up to $2000 per return. Depending on your individual situation (gross income, scholarships, grants, etc) there are any number of ways that your credits/deductions could play out with that many kids in school at the same time. Definitely time to see a professional.
