We have been told that we do not have to file an income tax return in South Carolina if we are over 65? My husband is older than 65 and the primary income; however, I am 63 with an income under $20,000. Are we required to file tax returns?

Residents 65 or older are not required to file if:
1) Gross income is less than or equal to the federal filing requirement plus $15000 ($30000 if MFJ and BOTH spouses are 65 or older), and
2) South Carolina income tax is not withheld from wages.
Part-year residents: Individuals are required to file if:
Gross income is greater than the federal personal exemption, or SC income tax IS withheld from wages.
