Is Rent Taxable For A Branch Office For Business?

My brother went to Florida to open a branch office for his business. He found a good location and signed a 2-year lease. His first bill from the landlord showed the monthly rental amount, plus it showed a 6% charge for FL sales tax. I’ve never heard of rent being taxed. Is rent taxable there?

Yes. Florida is one of the few states that taxes the rental of commercial real estate. Florida’s current rate is a flat 6%. However, quite a few of the counties in Florida also have an additional “Discretionary Sales Surtax”, ranging from .5% to 1.5%, on the rental of commercial real estate.
