I received a check for $1400 from the National Mortgage Settlement Administrator after a foreclosure. No 1099 was issued. Is this taxable?

If the check was specifically designated as payment for the lawsuits brought against the mortgage companies that did some shady foreclosing a couple of years ago, definitely taxable, line 21 other income not subject to self employment taxes. If it was for the repayment of mortgage interest, only taxable up to the amount of interest you deducted in those years.
