I am an XPAT in Afghanistan that is taxed by Afghanistan but this is paid for by my company. How can I pay the least amount of taxes out of each check but not worry so much come April 15th?

Hello, I am currently a contractor with Aegis World in Afghanistan. I have a quick question on whether or not I should claim exempt on my W4. You may already know that Afghanistan taxes us I believe 25%. Aegis pays this for us and then adds it in line 12 on our W2's. I would like to receive more money in my paycheck rather than wait for tax time.

From what I understand the Afghanistan tax will offset the US Federal tax. So if it offsets it then if I owe at tax time then the Afghanistan tax should cover what I owe, correct?

I guess the bottom line question is, what should I claim to not screw myself over come April 15th, but get as much as I possibly can each paycheck?

If you are a bona fide resident or if you are physically present for 330 days in a 12 month period, you probably qualify for the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion/Credit. Use Form 2555 to receive the credit. It will allow you to exclude up to $99,200 from U S taxation. This amount is pro-rated if you are not in the country for the full tax year. Once you determine how much you can exclude, you would then need to calculate your tax liability on your remaining income. Note that the income will be taxed at a rate that it would have been if you did not get the exclusion. In other words, assume you exclude the full amount, but your taxable income is $50,000. That amount will be taxed at the bracket that includes $149,200.
