I am a freelance writer looking to set up an LLC. I heard that setting up a corp in a state like Nevada is more economical and less redtape. Does it matter what state I set up my LLC or do I have to use CA because I live here? Thank you!

You can file for LLC in Nevada, Delaware, California. The filing fees would be less in one state over another. The paperwork might be less as well. The state filing fee for CA is $255., DE is $205. and NV is $315. Some states also have a publication filing requirement, where you must put an announcement in the newspaper announcing the establishment of your LLC.
It might be a good idea to contact a business that does incorporations, LLCs, etc.
