Brian Coddington
Senior Director of Tax Accounting Methods

Brian Paul Coddington provides compliance, consultation, and audit representation services in the areas of tax accounting methods and credits. Mr. Coddington has represented taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service in matters involving LIFO inventory methods, Uniform Capitalization (“UNICAP”), cost segregation, and research credit claims. He has represented clients before the I.R.S. National Office in numerous Accounting Method Changes. Mr. Coddington began his career at Source Advisors where he oversaw all tax technical research and provided technical support services, including audit representation, to all tax offerings. He then worked at a Big 4 firm in a national projects group that specialized in Federal inventory tax matters. In 2011 he became sole practitioner advising in the areas of tax accounting methods, research credit, and fixed asset issues. He is a frequent CPE presenter. Mr. Coddington is an Enrolled Agent, is a mediator in the state of Texas, and has pursued additional studies at Texas Wesleyan University School of Law.

Alex Pak
Director, Los Angeles

Alex joined Source Advisors in 2013 as an R&D Project Manager and in 2016 expanded his role to Director in the R&D Tax Credit Consulting department. His primary responsibilities included conducting preliminary evaluations for R&D qualification in addition to managing and executing projects for a wide range of industries. In 2021, Alex began working on development of strategic partnerships for the GOAT.tax platform as the Head of Customer Success.

Alex has extensive experience in numerous technology-related fields including cloud platform development, game development, mortgage, fintech, Department of Defense contractors, and engineering. He was also responsible for building computational models for credit calculations, developing audit-ready deliverables, and training all new hires on both the sales and production teams.

Prior to joining Source Advisors, Alex worked at a regional corporate tax consulting firm where he was a Director responsible for building several verticals by leveraging his knowledge of software development, engineering, and contract manufacturing. He has considerable experience with the R&D tax credit with regard to calculation, substantiation, and defense.

Alex holds a BA in English and a BA in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Irvine and is fluent in Korean.

Participants will gain an understanding of the current landscape regarding reliance on specialty software tools in the tax preparation arena.

After this course, the practitioner will have an understanding the new AICPA SSTS on Reliance on Tools, including two case studies:
Case Study on R&D Tax Credit tool
Case study on LIFO calculation tool
Prerequisites:
Some prior business tax experience is recommended, but not required. No advance preparation is required.

Attendance Policy:
To receive credit, attendees must sign in and be present for the 50 minutes of the hour-long presentation as measured by the presentation software and answer at least three polling questions.
