I assume that you are asking what assets are included in the federal gross estate? If so, then property owned by the decedent at death, property in which the decedent had any incidents of ownership, life insurance death benefits, and certain gifts made over the decedents lifetime. Assets can be excluded from the estate by placing them into a trust.
