I'm a full-time computer programmer who also works part-time as an independent contractor. Can I write off the computer books I buy to help me with my contracting job? Is there a limit on how much I can write off?

I have a full time job as a computer programmer. I also work as a programmer, on the side, as an independent contractor. If I buy computer books to help me with my contracting job, can I write them off? Is there a limit to how much I can write off? Will being a full-time programmer prevent me from writing off books I bought for my part-time contracting gig?

In general business expenses can be deducted as long as they are used for a business purpose. The fact that you have a full time job as a computer programmer should not interfere with any independent contractor jobs you obtain. There should be no limit as long as you can substantiate the expenses were necessary and reasonable for your work as an independent contractor, and not unreimbursed business expenses related to your full-time position as a computer programmer.
